The one rule that decides everything
Your seat should be set so your elbows sit level with the work surface, with your forearms roughly horizontal. In practice, that means a seat height around 250–300 mm below the bench top for most adults.
That single offset is why lab seating comes in distinct height classes. A chair that suits a seated desk cannot reach a standing-height bench, and a bench-height chair is unusable at a desk.
Step 1 — Measure your bench
- Measure from the floor to the top of the work surface, in millimetres.
- Measure at the position where you actually sit, not the tallest section of the bench.
- Note whether there is under-bench storage or a knee-hole — this affects stool vs chair choice, not height class.
Typical UK figures: seated desks and write-up benches run 720–750 mm. Standard laboratory benches run around 900 mm. Some workshop and instrument benches run over 1,000 mm.
Step 2 — Match your bench to a height class
Desk-height chairs — for benches up to 760 mm
Desk-height lab chairs have a seat range of roughly 400–530 mm. They suit write-up areas, microscopy desks, seated workstations and school science desks. Feet stay flat on the floor; no footring needed.

Bench-height chairs — for benches from 760 mm to 1,000 mm
Bench-height lab chairs have a seat range of roughly 585–835 mm and come with a footring, because at this height your feet no longer reach the floor. This is the standard laboratory configuration and our best-selling class — over 2,265 of the 005 alone are in daily use across UK labs.

For benches at the lower end of this band (up to about 900 mm), the A1 Medium Back and A3 High Back operator chairs (seat range 460–600 mm) are an office-style alternative with a full backrest.
Draughtsman chairs — for benches over 1,000 mm
Draughtsman chairs use an extended gas lift and an adjustable footring, built for tall workshop benches, drawing boards and inspection stations. Our A5 Draughtsman Chair has a seat range of 600–860 mm, covering benches up to roughly 1,150 mm.
Sit-stand stools — for shared or mixed-height work

Height class is decided by the bench. Everything else is decided by the environment:
